air filter advice

I've just gotten into the bike seen, it's been 30 years. Don't want to sound dumb. BUT, I just bought a Fat Bob. 700 miles on her. I was thinking of changing pipes for a little more sound. WHAT'S A DOWNLOAD. I'm a programer, so I know what it means, but is this something that has to been done at the dealer??
