Sounds like you found the problem...did you inspect and clean the rest of the fueling system as well...old bits of fuel tank lining, rust and water can make problems return as Glider said...just takes longer if you replace "just" the affected parts and not the "root cause". If you open the fuel cap and smell "old varnish" you still have potential problems, so make sure you do a complete job.:s
