question about codes

is there any way to flash codes on a harley or is a code reader / scanner a must have? iv had my old sporty along time and know it like the back of my hand ? but im looking at fi road kings and its all new to me. im an auto mechanic and know efi on cars quite well. i guess im afraid of 'the unknown' ;-)
