primary cover question

I have to replace the O ring for my clutch cable on a 1986-1990 1200 Sportster motor. I have tried to get the primary cover off but it wont slide off. I have removed everything on the cover that I can see, but am wondering if I am missing a step? It will not slide off. Can anyone offer advice?

Thanks for the information, you have been a big help. I did not take that off like I should have done.
