Folks,
Formike56 just had a catastrophic failure on his bike's engine, see here:
no oil pressure..... - Harley Davidson Community
This situation is a warning for all of us considering an upgrade to our cam shafts' drive systems (pre '07 and pre '06 Dynas). The pinion shaft runout must be less than .03" with the gear drive systems, and that is a hard max. Even with the runout significantly less, we may still have gear noise that we will find annoying after spending the money to up-grade. The roller chain up-grade (to the '07+ configuration) has no warning about the pinion shaft runout. I am not against the gear drive systems, since this is the option I favor, just want to put the warning out there for anyone else that is thinking about it. As a final note, make sure you check the pinion shaft runout while you are up-grading, since it has ramifications with respect to the oil pump as you can see from Formike56's situation.
TQ
