Welcome to HDTimeline Jim, Sounds like something is worn or bent...I do not have an older model, but perhaps you can take a few pictures, once you get another post or two!
When I am troubleshooting the sidestand, the easiest way is to park alongside a sturdy wooden fence, cut the front wheel all the way to the left, put the bike in gear and lean bike against it so it is slightly weighted to the right, and block the bike with 2x4's to steady it. Now you should be able to inspect it and check the travel and overcenter actuator/pivot mechanism.
