intermitent front wheel chirp

Well, a Hundred Dolla later (now you know what HD really stands for) and a couple hours work, I installed a new gear unit and cable last night and I'm good to go. The front end is soooo quite now it's like having a new bike :)

The unit was completely fried glider, thanks for the cable suggetion though.

Eureka! I've found the reason for the chirp.

After making sure the bearings, spacers and axle were ok, and living with the intermittent chirp for almost a year it was what I suspected from the git-go (and what dangerdan suggested)...The speedometer gear mechanism gave up the ghost this morning (in a very vocal way). Now the speedo is dead and I have no directional shut offs. The upside...the chirp is gone. :D

Heck, I only look at the speedo when I see a cop anyway, and by then, it's usually too late!
