Fuel Tank Material Change

glider.

BOT Machine
Fuel tanks on all 2004 Sportster and Dyna models, and Softail models produced after
January 2004, are made from NiClad carbon steel. This material resists corrosion and
eliminates the need for an epoxy coating inside the tank. The Touring model fuel tanks
will continue with the epoxy coating for the foreseeable future.
You could receive custom painted and replacement tanks either way for a short time
while the changeover is taking place. All Touring model tanks will continue to be Ecoated
from P&A.
Rust on internal tank welds may be noticeable but will not affect performance or integrity
of the tank and would not be covered under warranty. It is also normal to see light
surface corrosion in the area of the filler neck and/or fuel gauge cups. This light
corrosion is not considered to be a warrantable condition and should be cleaned with a
rust remover. For more information on what is, or is not, a warrantable issue relating to
the inside of fuel tanks, please refer to Warranty Bulletin W-130 issued January 21,
2004.

To clean an epoxy coated tank of peeled or separated coating, refer to the 2004 FL
Service Manual, Section 4, Page 4-22 under Cleaning and Inspection.
