I had to replace OEM fuel line from tank to carb. (To short now.)

I went to the HD dealer and they gave me 18"" of staight plastic fuel line.

Problem is how do I shape it so it wont burn/melt on hot engine parts.

I hope it isn't "plastic" because fuel line should be of a type made for fuel . You can use the plastic convoluted tubing available at home depot or other stores to run the fuel line through to protect it. The dealer should also have this too, it's on most bikes.

The new line is fuel rated...

I was just concerned about possible burning of line and fire.

I just had a thought, would it be alright to insert a thin stainless steel rod inside the fuel line then bend it to my needs

You could do that but it's not necessary, there shouldn't be a problem if you use the tubing mentioned above to protect the fuel line.
