Engine oil went missing

Started waking my 06 heritage up after 4 or 5 month sleep and found the engine oil was down off the stick. Reading the self help section best I can learn is that maybe the check valve in the oil pump has allowed the oil to leak into the sump, does this sound logical? If so there is better part of what I would guess a liter of oil in the sump, is it safe to start or is it best to pump it back up into the tank first?

You can safely start the engine, just don't race it and it will pump the oil back to the tank.Don't be alarmed if you get a tiny bit out the air cleaner. Maybe a bit of Marvel Mystery oil in the engine oil to clean things up then change it after riding some miles.

Common to have this happen after a long period of non use.

Thankyou thats what I was hoping for, thanks, I plan to update the can tensioner to the hyd soon, this will include new oil pump so if its the check valve that is leaking, it will be gone with the pump.
