i have s&s cylinders and heads on my harley cases. how do i tell what i have as far as bore displacment etc ?

If possible, ask the previous owner.
Otherwise, I think it would take a tear-down.

Is knowing the displacement needed?

Here is what S&S offers for the EVO top end. If you take the spark plugs out you can get a pretty good idea of what the stroke is. Products > Evolution Big Twin > Top End
