08 Bike Fuel Pump/filter Problems

Bulletin #M-1224- Safety Recall Code 0135 Dated July 28, 2008 to the dealers. Kits should be arriving by Aug 4 at the dealers for repairs.

Many have reported that the 08 bikes have given them trouble.
This shows itself in poor running, stumbling , backfiring because of lean mixtures and poor response to the throttle.
Dealers are finding problems with fuel pumps and or fuel filters cracking and not pumping properly and the fuel leaking back into the tank causing low fuel pressure to the injectors. Some have found cracks in the pump where the filter attaches and others have found pieces broken off either the pump or filter.

Just a heads up for the 08 owners and where to look.

Many have said that when you turn the ignition that a whooshing sound can be heard with the fuel cap removed. This is probably the fuel pressure escaping from the broken part and is more noticable with a lower fuel level in the tank.

Rumor has it the MOCO has been using the upgraded part in assembly since January....the 07 build dates are the ones with the defective part up to 12/07

"Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety may exist on certain 2008 model year FLHP, FLHPE, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRSE4, FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU, FLHTCUSE3, FLHTP, FLHX, FLTR model motorcycles built May 6, 2007 through December 11, 2007."

Here''s a pic of the replacement part for the 08 bikes 62229-08A. The arrows point to where the old ones are breaking causing the problems.

Another view of the same. Again, hard to see but there is a better/thicker ridge on the new tabs (on the left again)

The new one is on the top left, notice the change in the spot where the fuel pressure regulator sits. There are ribs inside that also.
