02 883 Speedo Stopped Working

Well as I was out testing the new grips I installed today, I noticed that me Speedometer was not working, and the turn signals were not cancelling. I checked the Speedsensor for any metallic debris that might have kept it from working properly, but it was pretty clean. I am going to check it for trouble codes in the morning and was just curious if there is anything else I should check to be sure it's the sensor? Is there a way to check it with voltage to know if the sensor is good or bad? Are these sensors known to go bad? I don't want to buy a new sensor and find out it is something else.
 
Changed the sensor, all is well now, at least around the block. The new sensor was the same part number but with the addition of a "B" at the end of it. Maybe the "B" means "Better" and it will last longer than a year as I had read in other posts.
