No slide hammer Joe, the lower leg gets pulled like a slide hammer once the lock ring is removed and it comes off that way leaving the seal on the tube. The seal driver is a piece of 1 1/2" pvc that you split lengthwise.

Re: Fork seal replacement

OK, gotcha G.! I've got tons of PVC pipe, so I goess I'm in good shape for this project. I saw your chart where it showed my bike should have 41mm seals. Trouble is, mine was in a front end collision by a previous owner. It's back %100 now, but should I take it for granted that that would be the correct size? If not, where, exactly do I measure? Also, is the lengthwise split to allow the pipe to adjust to the insides or what?

The 41mm is the size of the fork tubes. I doubt the front end was changed to a different size , it would require replacement of just about the entire front end including the trees. If your bike has the wide glide type front end, they are 41mm, if it is the narrow front end where the fender struts aren't bowed out where they go to the mounting boss on the sliders, then it isn't the 41 mm front end.

The lengthwise split is so that you can use it to seat the seals with the tubes still on the bike.

Re: Fork seal replacement

Fixin to atempt the same , right front seeping small amount out from top. Picked up O-ring , seals over weekend , but they haven't got my service manual in yet. I downloaded the 2003 Dyna manual from our dowdload section and was wondering if this would suffice or should I wait for mine to come in ? Does anyone know if they would be the same in that section of the manuals ? I also have been looking at buying a must have floor jack, Sears, Harbor- Freight , Tractor Supply CO. If anyone has had good or bad experiences with any of these I would appreciate your input. Or if you may know of someone else who carries the ATV- Motorcycle jacks in the $80 to $140 range. They all appear to look about the same from catalogue.

Re: Fork seal replacement

The fork setup should be about the same in your case.

As far as the jack, check the dimensions of the lift arms on the cheaper jacks. The padded part where it contacts the bike on some are about 12" and the span of the frame will just about fit on those units. Most are over 15" and better suited to lift the bike. Also take a look at the bolts in the cheaper units. Quite often you will find grade 3 bolts used in them which are not a good choice for strength.

Re: Fork seal replacement

I'm fairly sure that is the same front end, then. The struts do sort of angle out but on the other hand, it doesn't exactly look like a wide glide front end. sort of narrow. I'll go ahead with the 41mm seals and let you know how it goes. Here goes nothin'!!

Re: Fork seal replacement

Precisely, Hobbit, and that's just the way I plan to do it. I'm looking to learn something and save some money not destroy my bike and wind up shelling out more than I would have to start with!
