Primary Oil (synthetic)

Synthetic oil or "energy conserving " dino oil in the primary is not a good choice here in big twins. They contain friction modifiers and a clutch with some miles on it could be prone to slippage from using these oils.

The synthetic oils are a great choice for the engine as they will reduce friction between the moving parts, this however it the opposite of what the friction disks need in a clutch.

Most 10/40 or 20/50 without friction modifiers will work fine or you can use the HD formula + lubricant in the primary.

Not the same kind of wet cluctch not a good Idea you bike is not an automatic.
Now on the SNY side Redline and Spectro have started offering a SNY designed for the Primary jury is still out on weather they are the right way to go.
I switched both my bikes last week to the Redline SNY primary lube
One has 47,000 mile on the clutch a Fatboy the other a Rg with 24,000 on it we will see how it goes.
If I am wrong the FB clutch should show some problems first.

so far so good but it has not been long enought.
both bikes have shown no problems with and I have riden both of them in 33 degree weather with it.
Keep in mind the sny I am trying is for primary not an engine oil, big difference.
I still agree that sny engine oil in primary is a no go
We will give it time the FB should show any problems first it has 47,000 on the clutch all ready.

Re: Primary Oil (synthetic)

I've been running Redline MTL in my current bike 95" 108lb Ft for 38k with no problems. Just changed clutch to Energy One extra plate and checked with them. Although they don't recommend synthetic they said the Redline MTL was ok. My setup for 38k was stock clutch, vpc, and stock spring. I pulled it as I thought it should be wearing but plates were all well within spec and no bluing of the steels.

I have about 21,000 miles with Amsoil in all three holes and have had zero issues with clutch slippage. Total miles on the bike is around 55,000. EV-27 cam, S&S Super E. Breaks the rear tire loose between first and second power shifts.
