Have you adjusted the clutch? Take a look here: Harley Davidson Community (Easy Clutch Adjustment Method)

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
Transmissions do not "slip". You may have overfilled primary and clutches could be slipping.

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
The clutch will be slipping perhaps you have used an oil in the primary that has friction modifiers or is too thin to do the correct job
so a wee bit more info on oil in the primary may help Brian

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
Not clear to me what you have used in your engine, primary and tranny. Here are some generic recommendations:
Generic fluid recommendations Engine: FULL synthetic 20W50 VTwin engine oil Tranny: FULL snythetic 75W140 GL-5 gear lube Primary: Fit-for-purpose chaincase/wet clutch lubricant (like HD Formula + or Spectro Primary, Redline Primary, etc.) Measure how much comes out of the engine and tranny (separately of course!), and put that much back in as a starting point. Adjust when fluids are at operating temperature. Primary use the volume specified in your Operating Manual. TQ

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
As others have already mentioned the tranny fluid change is not going to cause slipping. Since you say that you also changed the primary fluid I would ask what you put in there. If AMSOIL was used what did you use? If you used a gear lube in the primary that may have been used in the tranny then you might slip the clutch. The Extreme-pressure additive containing fluids commonly used in gear lubricants should never be used in the primary because they can cause excessive clutch slippage.
If you use any of the Motorcycle engine oils in the primary that AMSOIL has available you will be OK. All AMSOIL Motorcycle Oils (engine oils) meet JASO MA2 friction requirements for use in wet clutch applications. Here is a link to a good read about wet clutch operation and lubrication requirements. Wet Clutch Operation and Lubrication Requirements - Harley Davidson Community If the correct fluid is in the primary you should check for an overfill condition and also consider a clutch adjustment to solve the issue. |

Thanks for your help. I used 20w50 Amsoil motorcycle oil for the oil change. I used Amsoil chaincase and gear oil in the primary. I think the problem is in the lubricant that I used in the primary. It is recommended for jet skis and ATVs. Can I use 20w50 in the primary?
No, I have not adjusted the clutch. After reviewing the other answers to my post, I think I used the wrong chaincase lubricant. I used Amsoil chaincase and gear lubricant with friction modifiers and I think that is why it is slipping. Last edited by The Tank; May 28th, 2012 at 05:02 PM. Reason: merged |

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
I would put some good ol' HD Formula+ in the primary, and watch your issue clear right up. You really don't need anything more than a simple dino oil in the primary.
Enjoy, Rich P |

You can use motorcycle oil (engine oil) that is 20W50 in the primary if they meet JASO MA2 friction requirements for use in wet clutch applications. The AMSOIL 20W50 that you used in the motor will work in the primary as it meets the JASO spec. Most motorcycle engine oil brands of various viscosities (20W50, 10W30 and 10W40) will carry that JASO specification. |

Re: Transmission slipping in 4th and 5th gear
Yes, I used a lubricant with friction modifiers. I need to change lubricant. What do you suggest that I use in the primary?
