We all get unsolved Mysteries or " Gremlins " from time to time .. Could tell a few no one would believe .. but main thing if holding the level again just be glad caught it in time and no damage done..

Possibly the "New" quart of oil you used was not completely full from the manufacturer. Sounds like all other possibilities have been eliminated. Easy to open a new oil container and assume it is full.
