Re: Transmission oil

you don't even have to google "Amsoil" to get billion hits on it you can just Google "synthetic motorcycle oil" and you won't get much on anything BUT Amsoil. I found that out when I was trying to find test and reveiws by anyone but amsoil. I spent hours searching, but amsoil seems to have got their hands on all the resources. I think if they were so smart at amsoil they wouldn't be recomending 20w50 engine oil for the transmision.

If you read their web pages, they actually cover themselves recommending it both ways with their MTL I believe it is or something like that.

Very clever of them to take both sides of the fence. This way it's YOUR decision.

Re: Transmission oil

Having someone who will benefit from a test/research as the sponsor of the test always seems bogus to me. That is why I really appreciate the testing by Not Very PC. Looks like the only real benefit he might receive besides seeing real results is getting to ride!!

Re: Transmission oil

I found this article searching around one day. It's a few years old but has some good technical info on oils. It's more geared toward High performance sport bikes than H-D's but it's still pretty interesting and un-bias.

Don't know much about the Lucas line of products although I've read posts on another forum where there are a few who use it. The most popular seem to be names like Amsoil, Mobil 1, H-D Syn 3 and a couple of others, I forget the brands right now.

I'm using the Syn 3 in my FLHR but have read that Mobil 1 is better and easily found on store shelves so next season when the fluid change is due I am probably going to switch to Mobil 1.

Steve

Chances are you will have no problems with the Amsoil products.
It's just that they push it so hard on people that it turns people off. Between the "white pages' and the 'four ball wear tests" it grows old fast.
I've said this before about people that brag about Amsoil and how great it is compared to other product. That is if someone was to remove the Amsoil from their motor and replace it with brand X, they probably couldn't tell the difference at all after all the bragging they did about the product. ANY oil will do the job, it's just that some oils are better than others.
Personally I don't put any faith in a product that boasts that they are so much better than other products and furnish test results that they sanctioned and payed for.
Just doesn't make a credible account in my book.
