Morris, you're right to question conflicting advice! You have a HUGE investment in your scooter, and it's scary as all get-out to think you might be "wrecking" it before you've "ridden" it, so to speak!

The only thing we want to assure you of is the importance of looking at the source of the info, and the baggage that might be attached to it.

Here, you get clean, no-agenda help from a veritable main-frame of Harley experience.....it's your best opportunity for help from someone who doesn't stand to benefit from your wallet!

Relax enjoy the bike .. Most of the people at the dealers think they are all it .. i love talking to them to see how far the (edit) meter goes just because you dont work there they think everyone is a idiot well after building race engines and repairing stuff everyday some of us know a little be too and dont run the how to try to get out of fixing stuff line

Re: Dealer has me worried about my break in

wow, this is very good stuff, the dealers tool guy was making me fell pretty bad consedering that this is my first HD, ever. But i ask about the breakin-in prosses and what i got from them was nothing but Bull, any way i was felling the same way as you, thinking that i was in for alot of trouble in the future. The only thing i dont get is that if we are all part of a brother hood, then wy try and make people feel or look stupid just cause you work for the dealer, is thier a test you take when you appli for a job at the harley store.LOL

drive on, as the infantry would say

Re: Dealer has me worried about my break in

You know, I think it really all depends on the dealer, and the folks he has working there.
For the most part, an older experienced mechanic is not going to intentionally give you bad information
Also, it depends on you. If you know nothing, you sort of leave yourself wide open to being misled, or misinterpreting what the mechanic is telling you.
You gotta do your homework, arm yourself with knowledge, and present the image that you didn't just fall off the turnip truck this morning.
No one is going to try and give you a snow job if you have at least a basic working knowledge of the questions you are asking.

GS, great points but I have to comment on one thing you said.....

There are a LOT of folks that haven't been riding for over 40 years, like me, a lot of the members here, and maybe you.

A lot of guys and ladies are just getting into riding, and just getting their first Harley.

They SHOULD be WELCOMED into the "Harley Family" by the dealer, and feel comfortable that they'll get an education there, not a "beating".
I think that an honest dealer and an honest tech team should WANT to take a new and inexperienced and un-informed rider and/or new Harley owner "under their wings", and do whatever they can to help the "new guy" feel like he can trust what they're going to tell him, and that the advise he'll get won't ALWAYS fall into the "asking the barber if you need a haircut" category.

Sure, they want to make a sale, and that's their business.....they're not a charity organization.
But trust and honesty goes a LONG way into making the NEXT sale, which a lot of dealers don't seem to care about anymore!
I think if I were a dealer I'd want "a customer for life", not just a customer for "today", ESPECIALLY in today's economy, where there simply aren't a whole lot of new customers to be had!

Re: Dealer has me worried about my break in

What is there to breakin on today's Harley engines. The rings do not seat nor is there any breakin on any ball or roller bearings. Most gears should have already had a deburring done on them but perhaps a "polishing in" needs to be. The first hour of riding polishes in the bushings and mates the clutch plates. I have always broken in an engine like Glider does. Have I missed some thing? Fossil

Re: Dealer has me worried about my break in

Glider,

I looked thru the self help section, but which section has the "new bike break-in" that's being refenced here? Thanks, Tracy

P.S.--I'm pretty happy with the dealership in Greensboro, took my new "Kruzer Kaddy" cup holder back because it didn't mount flush (thought the wife got the wrong one) and they showed me how it mounted (I'm the dufus)... while there, I asked them "how much to wash my bike" (it's filthy) service writer says "you're in here all the time, usually $5, but no charge for you. 20 mins later they bring out my bike and say that the primary chain was a little loose and adjusted it for me while they washed it----no charge. For a dealership, it doesn't get much better than that.

Re: Dealer has me worried about my break in

I followed Gliders advice after a 95" install as well as on my 09 Ultra. Last bike ran perfect and strong and used no oil. I expect the same results with this one. When I got on my 09 right off the bat, it smoked like a smoke stack during the procedure. The guy following me said he thought it was messed up as he had no idea I was doing the procedure. No more smoke and no oil used in 2K. Thats all I have on it due to weather.....
