white smoke from exhaust

I have a homebuilt softtail using a 1988 88inch evo motor. I bike has been sitting for the last two years. I changed the oil and started it. I get normal exhaust from the rear cylinder but I get puffs of white smoke from the front cylinder. When I shut the bike off I get a trail of white smoke from that cylinder. The plugs are black and slighty wet. Should I let the bike run a while with the choke off and see if the seals swell as everything gets lubricated or is it something more serious?

I would not turn a screw before I performed a leak down test for a problem such as this. Once you know the engine is fundamentally sound, you can roll up your sleeves.
