A friend has a 1998 r/k last ride he went on the bike devoloped a whine coming from the primary area. He trailered the bike to my house and asked me to take a look or listen .The whine is coming from the front of the primary and we pulled the cover off and started the bike the noise is coming from the stator area.The noise is a whine sort of like the alternator whine through a radio. Friend said the bike did not seem to be charging as good as it did before the noise started he has a little device that has yellow green and red lights on it to tell you how well its charging. I pulled the stator and nothing is hitting anything and all was tight.Could the stator be going out and causing this noise?

ALSO, while you were in there, did you LOOK to see IF any of the windings were burn or discolored???

Early signs of over loaded or burning out if the colors are darkened..

I'd disconnect the stator while running and Listen IF it quits the noise like Hoople says, then that is probably the problem..:D
