I am new to Harley ownership and while talking to other 2 Harley bike owners with Softtails asked what makes a Softtail a Softtail? Neither one knew ...so how did it get the name?

It has to do with the comparison to a hard tail without any suspension and thus is called a softail because of the similar looks but with suspension.

just like glider said, it's the look of a hard tail, no suspension, with the shock/spring assembly hidden in front of the rear wheel.

Sorry, spelling was always my weak point....thank God for spell check ,but it just doesn't know every nuance of the language.
