What is this part

This part has everyone stumped, just what is it. Looks like a push rod tube, but the spring makes it look like something for an antenna. It fastens with a small precision nut and bolt (missing) at the two ears.

I was thinking something for an antenna, but the tube is hollow with a spring on top and no mounting point for the antenna mast. It's just a strange part that everyone I work with cannot figure out including the guy who owns the place and even he doesn't know what it is.
He buys all kinds of stuff in boxes at swap meets and it may include car parts or parts from industrial machinery. I found an oil tank plug for a piece of vintage machinery in one of the boxes.
