What did I do wrong?

Had a bad lifter so decided to change all the lifters, cam, and cam bearing. Started the bike and it made a terrible noise. Shut it down and removed cam cover. The thrust washer had spun with the cam and took out a chunk out of the case, which in turn took out one of the lifters and one lobe. What did I do wrong? Any ideas would be appreciated.

The inner cam bearing is not seated in the case (and it's in backwards too always lettering out) causing the cam to have insufficient end play. That heated up the thrust washer enough to weld it to the cam and spin with it.Cases will be ok after a little clean up.Cam and inner bearing are toast.Start over and purchase a service manual while you're at the shop. There's a little more to installing a cam then just bolting it in.
