On the newer Ultra's, you check the tranny on the jiffy stand, without screwing in the dipstick just like you said. The amount called for has been right on on my 09 Ultra and I have changes it twice so far. Watch it closely next change to see if you are less than capacity. Either way, keep it where it belongs on your dipstick.
