Timing cover engraving

I see some nice custom engraved timing covers on the net. I don't know how these are done or what the processes involved are. I know that chrome can't be engraved (at least I think I know that).

What material are our timing covers made from steel or aluminum?

Can they be chromed after the engraving and lettering filled in black?

Has anyone had this done and can recommend a company?
