No reason you can't, same setup on the oil pan with the extra bung for the sender unit. Just have to mount the gauge then.
 
Hope you're not considering an AIR temp gauge - they're pretty useless. I'm switching mine to an oil temp gauge at some point in the near future.
 
Oil temp gauge is what I'm looking for. I would like to see what it is running on long trips. I'm just curious....

The oil gauge kits that are sold to replace the useless air temp gauge stock on the dashboard models relies on the wiring that exists from the OEM. For a new feature installation, it is probably a good idea to see what you can find as an after-market package that includes gauge, wiring kit, sending unit, bracket and mounting hardware specific for your bike.
