Steering Head Play

Update!

Thanks guys, for all your input.

I finally did the job and it was relatively easy. A couple of things I learned that might be of help to another guy who decides to replace his riser bushings:

1. Leave the handle bars attached until the riser bolts are loosened. This helps to counter the wrench torque.

2. Once the riser bolts are loosened, remove the handlebar clamp and remove the handlebar.

3. Remove the riser, riser bolts, and replace the bushings.

4. Reinstall the risers and riser bushings.

5. Grease the steering column (there is a grease fitting) and check the fall away as New HD 74 Fan previously suggested.

6. Reattach the handle bar.

Note: I tried to reinstall the riser bolt with the handle bar attached and ended up cross threading the bolt, access is difficult. I was able to save the riser by chasing out the threads and was lucky I didn't have to buy a new riser.

There it is for what its worth, and as Jack mentioned above, protect the paint. I am glad I did.
