stator question

any one know any causes for a stator to go bad or is it always just from age?.i have had some electrical problems with bare wire shorts and a key ign. switch. got all these fixed and replaced all the breakers, now the stator is shot. pulled the plug to do a test and the plug pins were all burnt plus tests show bad stator

I doubt your shorts caused the fault, but don't forget to change your regulator while your at it. If you just change your stator odds are you'll be changing your regulator very soon.:s

Finding root cause is the stuff that whole Quality Assurance departments are made. Just knowing what a tough life the stator and regulator conditions live in, consider the large temperature shifts, vibration, and electrical stresses these pass elements do when converting moving magnetic field into electrical energy (stator) and the heavy wattage where 30% of the energy totally produced when at speed is dissipated as "wasted" heat (regulator), if the battery is fully charged and the only electrical load is the headlights, ignition, fuel pump and your accessories.

One small breakdown in the insulating varnish, in one of the many coil windings causes local heating and soon that wire becomes a fuseable link, stressing the system. The only cooling the stator gets is the fact that it is not near the engine, with conduction cooling to the tranny case only, the regulator is in open air with large heatsink so all is well up front, so it usually is collateral damage that claims it's life.

Ditto above on the changing the VR too. Just a short little bit, and it will probably go.
