Starter issue

Hi everybody !

I own a dynaglide FXD 2002. Just installed a new Vance and Hines exhaust system ( long shots staggered ) and was very anxious to hear the sound of it.
My good Lord, I 'll have to wait a bit. The engine couldn't start due to a starter problem. The issue is: starter is turning, the gear is coming out of it, makes contact with the dented wheel at the clutch hub, but engine don't turn. Like the starter gear was turning freely, not connected to the starter motor.
Any idea if I'll have to replace the whole thing or if it could be fixed ?

Thanks

Colas

Have you been having starter issues or is this something recent? From what you describe the starter gear engages but won't turn the engine over, is it possible the starter shaft snapped? The only way you'll know is to pull it take it apart and see. Starters can be rebuilt if your handy.

It could be a bad drive, start with a load test of your battery

might have teeth missing from fly wheel. put in gear push a little get motor to turn a little try to start if it starts ring gear missing teeth.
