Starter chunking

2011 Heritage starter makes chunking sounds when you try to start it. Sounds like starter is starting and stopping over and over.Replaced starter as advised and it still does it. bike has 32000 mi. on it.Everthing on clutch hub looked good no medal shavings in primary case. Looking for suggestions.

When my compensator went my starter would engage, then miss and sound like it was tearing every tooth loose.

Sound like a coffee can full of marbles banging around? Mostly or only happen when restarting after the engine is hot? If so, Steve's right and it's likely the compensator.
