drbeard, the most accurate oil check is with the engine fully warm at operating temp and keep the level a touch below the full mark.

Is this info the same for older bikes, mine is a 99.?
Not showing on the stick when I check it cold.

YES..... Read Choppers answer is on top...

Even on my 06 1200R, the oil disappears when cold and set long,,, BUT like magic re-appears when hot...

I've done the same thing on my 1st oil change. I have a hd manual and it called for 3.6 quarts so I figured I'd dump 3 in and see what I need from there. Long story short, had a very nice mess to clean up and had to pump the excess oil out of the tank.
