Softail Shock Adjustment

Posted by "Joyflyin", here's an overview on how to do it.

I'm not sure that there is a 'standard' setting for these. I have the 2005 Manual, and the way that is described you need to get a spanner wrench, (PN HD-94455-89) and then adjust the shocks to your desired setting.

Turn the adjuster plates out (toward the locknut) increases the spring preload to carry a heavier load.

Turning the adjuster plates in, (away from the locknut) decreases the spring preload to carry a lighter load.

I think you just kind of work with it until you get the setting you want.

Here's a bit more on this adjustment.

Have to add that the stock configuration may be set to some 150-lb. possible customer, set for the smoothest ride, and by tightening the shock up, you actually may find that the bike rides SMOOTHER, not HARSHER - too soft of a setting is just as bad as too tight.
I ride for performance (like ya stole it) and found that nearly all the way tight is the best for my 210 lbs. and twistie rippin' rides.
