    Hello,

I joined today and wanted to ask what everyone thought.

I purchased a new 07 Yamaha Stratoliner and after 5700 miles, I have decided that it is not for me.

I was at a Harley dealer yesterday and they have a used 2001 Road King in great shape.

WOuld I be crazy to trade for this?
The only problem I see is the seat height, he said he can put a lowering kit on.
My inseam is only about 26 3/4, and it is higher than my Yamaha.
I never road a Harley before, but know the RK will not have the power my Yamaha has (1894 cc) vs (1450 cc) I think.

After riding the yamaha awhile, my shoulders ach because of the position of the handle bars. The RK feels more natural.

I would end up losing about 2500.00 in trade and go down several years.

    What do you think?

    Yamaha color is cobalt blue
    RK is Purple

    Thanks

    Frank

frocco, Harleys are for long leisurely rides, they are not for quick short hops, though they can do this. I think age plays quite a role in what bike you buy. As you get older, your wish for blinding speed diminishes and comfort plays a big part. I have always lived by, if you want something, even if you take a hit of a couple of K, does it really matter, so long as you are riding the bike that you are happy with

Though I love my Road King I would tell you not to jump the gun on this one. Did you ride the RK yet. It is a totaly different expirence than the Yammie. I think the difference in power will be a lot less than you think. I ride with a buddy that has an 05 Road Star Silverado (1670cc it think..102ci) and my bike has a little more snot than his( Very little). He has the performance manifold Big air kit Vance and Hines pipes and it has been jetted. So I don't think the power will be THAT big of an issue .Though you would notice a drop off compaired to the Stratoliner (the displacement is a lot closer between my 1584 and my buddies1670 ) Has the dealer let you ride the bike? What mods have been done? How many miles? Can you beat the dealer up on the price a bit? There is a seat called a "reach " out there that is narrower at the tank to help get your legs closer together. If you are interested I would tell the dealer it has to be installed free before you would take it.

I think the biggest thing is to get the dealer to let you ride it (and not just around the parking lot) because if you are going to trade down in years I would be darn sure I liked it.

The RK has about 35k, highway miles.
Not sure if I can ride it.

If the dealer wants to sell it he will let you ride it. With 35k on it I would make sure the dealer has checked the cam chain tensioner. This isn't a big issue but Harley has some failure issues around 40k.

Here are som links to help

    frocco,

Have you thought about modifing the Yamaha's riding postion? All you may need is new handle bars.. Also did the Yamaha feel natural the first time you sat on it? Think about it...

You are now having problems with seating position. So anything that's not your Yamaha may slant your opinion.

Be prep'ed for the dealer to give you the short end of the stick on the trade. Non Harleys don't sell well at a dealer. As for the claim of 35K highway miles... Well, I would take that with a grain of salt.

You can buy a boat load of handle bars for 2500.00. That's if the only problem is the reach...

Now, if you have Harley fever, that's another thing.

I would definately make sure that it is right for you. Only you can decide iof a 2500 hit is worth it. Ride the RK. Make sure it is really what you want. If you are not sure, look into new handlebars for the Yamaha.

I agree with everyone else. Ride it first. If you are wanting a Harley, ride a few different once to see which one you really like before you decide. They sell them everyday so you don't have to jump at the first one that comes along.
