shock absorber

Can anyone tell me if the front shock absorber(progressive suspention 31 series springer damper)is like a car shock and is suppose to return on its own when you manually compress it? I priced one, it was 172.00, Is there a cheap place to get one? thanks

I think my shock absorber(damper) is bad, but I can't tell. The service manual says that there is no spring inside, and there is no pre-load, so how do you know if its good or bad? There has to be some resistance, but how do I know if its enough, surley the thing has to do something in order to help keep the tire in contact with the road. (this is on a springer front end.)

If the shock goes bad it will leak all over the fork.And the bike will pogo bad.
