rpm take a few seconds to come down.

thanks every one for your help, I did fix it, the springs on the vacuum advance were a little weak, I changed them out and all is good.
 
If Ign. system had been changed out to a Dyna type or points then there would be a mechanical advance system. They have 2 small springs and do wear out causing problems. He didn't say what Ign. type he had.

We say alot of that problem with the mechanical advance in older Chevys. Glad those day are over.
 
Gonna take a step back on this one........

Is the motor cold when this happens, or warmed up? I know that's a pretty basic question, but even cage motors don't always rev down quickly when cold. Just askin........

Obviously, worn parts and Systems out of adjustment can contribute to your trouble; combination likely.
