Repair manual

does anyone know of, or recommend a decent repair manual? I have a 90 fxrs. I have an “official factory manual” for 93-94 flt and fxr. This was given to me for free. I was told it’s the same thing “pretty much”. I don’t buy that though. Everything I’ve seen is around $100+. I was expecting $30-40 tops. Can anyone help a brotha out?

Older HD manuals often sell for as much as a new one. Harley manuals are quite a bit better than other published manuals that I've seen. There are differences in the transmission and drive pulley nut between yours and '93's as well as self cancelling turn signals and some other things that escape me right now.

It's been a few years since I purchased a service manual, price ~ $60, I have no idea what they go for now.

What I really want to know is some specs for this starter. Went to fire the bike up and it just clicked. Charged the battery, same thing. Sounds like the solenoid to me although I could be wrong. I took the thing apart, cleaned up all the brushes and commuter. Failed the bench test. On second inspection the brushed look pretty worn down but I would like to know some specs on these. Anyone know of a good place to buy new components. I’m thinking a new field coil and brushes? I’m a cheap skate and have a hard time shelling out $200 for a new starter

Any shop that rebuilds starters should be able to help you out with parts.
Cheap skate and owning a Harley don't really go together, that's why Honda's were made.

Haha. And Yamaha’s ;)I have noticed a lot of doctors and lawyers riding lately :p suites during the week and dress up in leather and play biker on the weekend. Cool dudeo_O

So I’m going with your advice Jeff. Thank you. For some reason I thought this stuff would be readily available. Guess I’m having an amateur learning experience. Called a place we used to take alternators and starters to at the old shop. He said he could probably order what I need. Just to bring it down to him. Worst case scenario I just pay him to do it. Maybe $100. Crisis averted. For now...

If you get the p/n for the Factory Service Manual for your bike (model & year), then go to one of the discount HD online parts places, you should be able to get a new manual fairly inexpensively. Try Boardtracker HD and New Castle HD as starting points.

Your bike's FSM P/N is 99483-90. Just checked on the two HD online parts places I recommended above, and they BOTH list those for over $100!!! I'm shocked!

Cheers,

TQ

i might just have to bite the bullet. I’m impressed with the detail in the one I’ve got. It’s supposedly a factory manual. Like you said all the ones are easily over $100...

took it to the shop. The guy said it in fact was not my brushes. That it was the plunger in the solenoid. $20. That sure beats the (EDIT) out of $220 for a new assembly. Haven’t put it all together for a bench test. Got trick or treating with the kids tonight and then I’m taking a much needed vacation. WITHOUT the kids. I’ll let y’all know. Thanks for the advice
