removing rear wheel 2006 Heritage Softail Custom

In removing rear wheel on my 2006 Heritage Softail Custom, the manual says to remove rear brake pads before removing rear axle. Is this necessary?

Disregard. I pressed on, and did NOT remove the brake pads. The caliper slipped off ok, and the wheel is now removed.
