The wires embedded in the pavement have a low voltage current running through them. In order to set off the sensor you, need to put the bike in the middle of the box or circle. The inside of the circle (or box) has an electromagnetic field and when an object enters it, it is supposed to detect the change in the field. If there are no lines in the pavement then the light is on a timer.
