Certain 2014 Harley-Davidson Breakout and 2014 Harley-Davidson Softail Slim motorcycles are to pay a visit to the H-D dealers, and receive corrections to the programming of the body control module. Sources report that a programming error causes the lit area of the brake lamp to be less than specified and agreed by the Canada Motor Vehicle lighting standards.
Besides the obvious lack of compliance with Canadian road and safety regulations, the reduced brake light may also prevent motorists to observe the riders’ maneuvers, putting them at risk. According to CMG, Harley-Davidson dealers will reprogram the corresponding settings of the body in the control module and restore full functionality to these bikes.
Since recalls made in Canada are almost always followed by their US counterparts, we expect to hear from the NHTSA and Harley quite soon, bringing back a larger number of motorcycles and possibly finding the same problem in more models.
