rebuilding caliper

You don't have the pads reversed do you? There is an inner and outer pad. If you get them switched, no amount of effort will get the pins in.
 
Not sure if I had them reversed or not. Went at it with a fresh head & went together fairly smooth. I didn't realize that the anti rattle spring would make me need to apply extra pressure but nonetheless I cleaned up the calipers as recommended here and issues solved. Thanks to all for the help & advise!

Good job! Glad you got it back together. Don't forget to pump them up before you start riding again.
