my sportster keeps backfiring and won't idel, I guessed the timing is off, anyone have any ideas?

Did this just start or did you mess with your timing? It doesn't idle, but how does it run? If it backfires through the pipes-check for exhaust leak. If your carb is "coughing" then it's probably lean. Idling issue is usually an intake leak problem. Use a carb cleaner and spray around your manifold. Does your idle go up?

I doubt that your electonic ignition is causing this, although it can.

What kind of ignition do you have in it?
