Questions about the oil tank

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the oil tanks. I recently bought a custom FXR
with a 96" S&S allthough the only thing harley is the transmission.

The Harley's I've owned years ago all had oil tanks. This one has an oil pan
on the bottom. Can someone please explain when HD started this and why?

It looks like the engine and transmission are common.
Any advantages or disadvantages?
I think I saw this on a Roadking also.

the touring models use this kind of oil pan and the newer hds use the trans and engine connected
