I have a 2007 Nightster, that does not like 5th gear unless I am going above 60mph. As a result, it very often feels like I am lugging the engine if I forget and shift into 5th at 50 or 55.

Has anyone ever changed their primary gearing to the 883 of 57/34 from the 1200 57/38? If so, how do you get the speedo to be correct?

The reason I'm thinking of the change is that I believe I would get a better launch, and be nicer to the motor when running 60 - 65.

PS. the bike has 5K miles on it so breaking it in now is most likely not an issue.
 
1+ on doing staying in 5th below 70 mph...engine feels like you can feel every power pulse from the lugging senstation (and this is from a past metric guy who likes to not feel the engine wanting to ping or lug in top gear). :D
