On my 2002 Roadking I need to check the tension on the primary chain, when i open the inspection cover on the primary cover can someone tell me what the measurement should be between the chain and the top of the cover.

Push on the upper
strand on the chain to verify that it has free movement
midway between the engine compensating sprocket in
the front and the clutch sprocket in the rear.
a. With the engine cold, upward (not total) free play in
upper strand should be 5/8-7/8 in. (15.9-22.3 mm).
b. With the engine hot, upward (not total) free play in
upper strand should be 3/8-5/8 in. (9.5-15.9 mm).

Thank You for the info, i do have a manual but didn't realize that would be there.

An easy measurement tool is to use a 5/8" and 7/8" open end wrench. It's a lot easier to stick the wrench in there, than a tape measure! :D
Then, hit the starter a couple of time and measure different sections of the chain. There may be tight and loose spots. Adjust to the loose spot.

Never tighten to the tight spot. Looser is a safer bet here......
