PCIII, SERT, TFI or DFO? What's The Difference?

Many have asked the same question of which one is best for my bike.

Your choice as to which one to use should based on a few things...

Your budget should come first, your skills for setting it up if you are doing it, your plans for future modifications and how far you wish to go with the tuning.

The TFI ($160-$250) would be the entry level with no major mods such as heads and radical cams planned in the future. Easy install and setup, can be done by most DIY'ers with minimal tools and knowledge, lowest of the prices. Very good results too. Very widely used and results with the intake and exhaust coupled with the TFI will be in the 8-10 HP range. Not much more gotten with other more expensive systems here. The TFI only adjusts fuel, no timing or cylinder trim.
Motorcycle Fuel Injection Kits and Electronic Fuel Injection Systems - EFI

Next comes the HD race fueler ($180-$200+), similar to the TFI but with 2 additional pots to tweak for crossover. No real benefit to them IMO

Next I would say the PCIII ($250-$300). A bit more complex to set up than the TFI, computer skills needed (if you do it) and a working knowledge of motors/ignition systems to do it correctly. They also work well and are widely used.
Fuel Moto USA

The SERT ($350-$450)...probably one of the best ways to go, but again complex to set up and the above criteria holds true here also.(skills etc.)
MILWAUKEE, WI Jan. 30, 20032 - Plug in a laptop computer and maximize the performance of any fuel-injected Harley-Davidson race engine with the Screamin' Eagle EFI Race Tuner, a sophisticated software package from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories.

Designed for use in racing applications, Screamin' Eagle EFI Race Tuner software is divided into two modes. Tuning Mode allows the user to tune certain variables of the EFI system for changing track conditions and performance product combinations. The Data Mode monitors up to 28 variables and records and graphically represents tuning changes with easy-to-read graphs or charts. It can produce horsepower and torque curves and speed-to-distance estimates based on recorded data from your last run down the drag strip. The software also includes Screamin' Eagle calibrations, which may be downloaded and tuned to maximize horsepower and torque of an EFI race engine.

The kit (P/N 32107-01) has a suggested U.S. retail price of $459.95 and includes tuning software and User's Manual on CD, an electronic interface and required cables. Dealer installation is required.

For additional information on the Screamin' Eagle EFI Race Tuner kit and other Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Genuine Motor Accessories see your local Harley-Davidson dealer or visit the Harley-Davidson Website. Then there is the Twin tech with 02 sensors($700 range+), similar to the S&S IST unit that will tune as you ride, again initial set up as above with skills involved.
Daytona Sensors LLC - Engine Controls and Instrumentation Systems for Automotive and Motorcycle Applications

There is also a unit from Zippers with auto tune that sells for aprox. $700-$800 and tuned itself after a base map is installed, thereby no dyno runs are needed.
Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and Performance Parts for Harley Davidson and VTwin Motorcycles

Pretty much all but the TFI would benefit more with dyno tuning and professional install and setup if you are not familiar with the systems otherwise you can hurt yourself more than you can help yourself, end up with problems with pinging and poor performance and possible damage to the engine as a final result. They offer canned maps for most units except the TFI that will get you close, but from there you can tweek it even more for better performance.

Pretty much all the various units will net you 10-12 HO and more torque when used with the stage 1 intake and an exhaust modification like slipons or 2 into 1 pipes. Your goal would be jusdged on what you want out of the motor in regards to power, how much you want to spend and how you ride. Spending a large sum of money does not necessarily mean you are getting more out of the motor, it is only more finely tuned but in some cases makes more work for the setup to get some problems that arise like pinging at various loads and fuel delivery mapping correct.

If you don't think you are capable of programming the systems, by all means have it done by a professional.
