Thanks everyone for the advice. I took the Sportster to my local Harley dealer (Adamac) and they replaced both plugs for free. I looked at the old plugs and the rear plug was good, but the front plug (which was the cylinder that was not always working) showed that it had been running real lean. The mechanics told me that there was nothing that I could do about the problem of one cylinder missing on startup except changing the plugs and added that when I start it not to keep the choke on so long.
