Old Softail Shocks

Hello I just got a pair of older Softail shocks in a parts trade. They have a cannister attached to them. Pre 1988 from my search so far. The lines to the cannister have been detached at the shock body. I was wondering what the possibility is to put these back into service. Can they be reassembled and recharged? What would thay be rechared with? Air, oil, nitrogen or something else?

From your description they sound like an air ride suspension that would use either an air fill valve or on board compressor to adjust the ride height of the bike.

I'll post a pic of them. I have a swing arm axis tube that has brackets which these cannister fit right into. I'll post later. Long day today. Thanks for the response glider
