Noise from transmission

When shifting I notice that if I release the clutch quickly before applying throttle I hear a snapping noise in the transmission. If I get it right and apply throttle just before starting to let the clutch out this does not occur. Can someone explain what is happening in the transmission that causes this snapping sound?

What you're describing sounds like drive train snatch. It's caused by the tolerances or clearances in the different parts of the drive train.

Thank you Glider. Sounds like what we called gear lash in a naval destroyer engine.
