Day 2 3 June, 2012, Sunday

Beautiful weather in Clarksville this morning. (I know I’m a day behind on the post). I woke up earlier than anticipated, but decided to have a more relaxed pace today. While loading the bike I got a message from an HDTimeline member, Tom, aka, MrSleepy. He invited me to breakfast and left me his number. I called him and although he gave excellent directions, I only followed them 99%. I spent 45 minutes riding around looking for him because I thought I had gone for far. In fact, had I gone a quarter of a mile further on my original course I would have found him. Anyway, we finally connected and I met him and his lovely wife and we had breakfast and Tom took me to the “Land Between the Lakes” in western TN. It was an absolute pleasure to meet both of them and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. Tom headed back and I proceeded up the “Trace” then toward Paducah, KY and points west. It got a lot warmer today than it was yesterday, but I kept the leather jacket on in order to keep from wind or sunburn. I made sure to take in plenty of water to stave off dehydration. Around 1600 it became evident that I was going to get caught in the rain. Somehow I didn’t get soaked and checked into the Hawthorne Motel in Van Buren, MO. I had no sooner unloaded the bike, put the cover on it and the bottom fell out. Perfect (lucky) timing. 295.6 miles today. It looks like I’m at the front end of a major weather front about to move through this area. We will see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks again for sharing your trip. Blessings and safety as you cross this great nation again.

Day 3 June 4, 2012, Monday

I didn’t get on the road until 0830 as the weather didn’t look like it was going to cooperate. It was hot and humid, but as I got underway it cooled off a little and the rain moved further south. As the morning progressed the skies brightened up and it was a pleasant ride on my trek westward. When I stopped for fuel in Willow Springs, MO I had gone exactly 1000 miles since I left home. Although I must have been close to attractions that would warrant a picture I didn’t see anything worth stopping for. By the time I entered Kansas it was stifling hot, but I didn’t want to take off my jacket and risk dehydration or sunburn. I holed up for the night in a great little place in Eureka, KS, the Blue Stem Motel. There may not be any pictures tomorrow either as I want to make an early start and try and get to Colorado. There WILL be pictures after that. I don’t have time to contact everyone who is following this adventure, but I appreciate all the interest and support.

Day 4, June 5, 2012, Tuesday

A grueling day in the saddle today. I didn’t plan on it being like this and I will not do it again. I pulled out of Eureka, KS at 0630 and more that 12 hours and 644.2 miles later got a room in Loveland, CO. There were some places that I anticipated visiting, but without making this an endurance test, I don’t think I can reasonably fit them all in. I’ll re-evaluate my map and make some adjustments. The ride to Loveland was long, hot and humid for half way, then the cross-winds in Colorado made for a rough ride. Very little scenery, but the crop fields seem to go on forever. I’ll head into Estes Park, CO in the morning; that should more than make up for what I have seen thus far.

Pru,
Glad to see that you are back in the saddle for another 30 day trip. I really enjoyed your ride report from 2010 and will follow this one as well.
